Another post for Teaser Tuesday and First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros! I'm so happy that I read 4 books this week. Initially I set the Goodreads 2015 Reading Challenge to 50 books, but I realize that I'm never going to make it with all the college stuffs. So I cut it down to 25 books for this year [even though I'm hoping for more :( ]

Today I'll be highlighting another Melina Marchetta's book. This is new from her for me. I adore all her contemporary books, so I'm sure despite the fantasy genre, she will surprise me all the more!

The first paragraph and teaser:

First paragraph from Prologue:

A long time ago, in the spring before the five days of the unspeakable, Finnikin of the Rock dreamed that he was to sacrifice a pound of flesh to save the royal house of Lumatere.

The dream came to him from the gods on the eve of the Harvest Moon Festival, when the whole of the kingdom slept under the stars in the Field of Celebration. It was Finnikin's favorite night of the year, watching his fellow Lumaterans dance and give thanks for a life of peace and plenty. When the dawn broke and the priest-king sang the Song of Lumatere, the joy in people's souls lit up their world. And what a world it was - made up of those hailing from the Flatlands, the Forest, the Rock, the Mountains, and the River. All protected by a beloved king and queen and their five children, said to be descended from the gods themselves.

First paragraph from The First Chapter:

When it finally appeared in the distance, Finnikin wondered if it was some phantom half-imagined in this soulless kingdom at the end of the world.

There had always been talk that this land had been forsaken by the gods. Yet perched at the top of a rocky outcrop, cloaked in blue-gray mist, was proof to the contrary: the cloister of the goddess Lagrami.

[Teaser Tuesdays]: April 7

3 months! I've been away from book reading and blogging for t.h.r.e.e. horrifying months :O :'(
2015 is indeed one of the busiest years for me, as deadlines are sticking everywhere. I have only touched two books so far, which is really down degrading for me. I think my Goodreads Reading Challenge this year will be a failure T_T

Nevertheless, I'm trying to keep back on track only a bit. I admit that in this busy days, the only genre that catches me is contemporary. So here's the newest pick from me which I'm struggling so hard to finish despite all the bumps.

First paragraph:

The P-38 WWII Nazi handgun looks comical lying on the breakfast table next to a bowl of oatmeal. It's like some weird steampunk utensil anachronism. But if you look very closely just above the handle you can see the tiny stamped swastika and the eagle perched on top, which is real as hell.

Random teaser:

It's amazing how different they are from me.

Also, it's sort of thrilling to mess with their heads-to see how stupid they are, because they would never dream I have a gun, even though I basically just told them I do.

Does this teaser whip you up? For me, since I read the blurb of this book, I've already been excited to get into it! There's some kind of tug on me which urges me to read more of Matthew Quick's books. I'm sure this one will be a firework for me :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2015, lovely people! How were the very first days in 2015? For me, it's tiring. So much to do this January, even from the beginning. Many has written bookish resolutions for this year, but I don't think I can follow you, guys. I'm afraid I'll be reading less books in 2015. I even set the Goodreads' goal onto only 50 books this year. What a shame :( Hope you have much better resolutions than me!

From the prologue:

My father took one hundred and thirty-two minutes to die.

I counted.

It happened on the Jellicoe Road. The prettiest road I'd ever seen, where trees made breezy canopies like a tunnel to Shangri-La. We were going to the ocean, hundreds of miles away, because I wanted to see the ocean and my father said that it was about time the four of us made that journey. I remember asking, "What's the difference between a trip and a journey?" and my father said, "Narnie, my love, when we get there, you'll understand," and that was the last thing he ever said.

From the first chapter:

-Twenty-two years later-

I'm dreaming of the boy in the tree and at the exact moment I'm about to hear the answer that I've been waiting for, the flashlights yank me out of what could have been one of those perfect moments of clarity people talk about for the rest of their lives. If I was prone to dramatics, I could imagine my sighs would have been heard from the boundaries of the school to the town down below.

I realise, after a moment or two, that I am not alone. Slowly I look up, beyond the tree trunk, higher than the branches, to the very top. There, in broad daylight, is the boy in my dream staring down at me.

[Teaser Tuesdays]: December 23

Christmas and year 2015 are coming! *hope this won't be my last post in 2014* Have all of you already been in holiday? I wish everybody to have great holidays with your loved ones. Do you still have time for reading or busy decorating the Christmas tree? ;) for me, I won't have any trees this year, but it's okay as long as my family's with me.

Now let me introduce the book I'm reading, another masterpiece from Melina Marchetta, The Piper's Son.

First paragraph:

From the prologue:

The string slices into the skin of his fingers and no matter how tough the calluses, it tears.
But this beat is fast and even though his joints are aching, his arm's out of control like it has a mind of its own and the sweat that drenches his hair and face seems to smother him, but nothing's going to stop Tom. He's aiming for oblivion.

From the first chapter:

He's just Tom.
"Thomas Finch Mackee?"

The everyman with the most overused name.

"Come on, mate. Try to keep awake," the voice says.

Even the Bible was hard on them. The doubter who didn't trust his band of brothers and had to see the proof for himself to believe. He never liked that story. It made the Toms in history look piss-weak.

Random teaser:

How can he explain that the international code 670 isn't the issue? The 44 is. The U.K.

Because five minutes before he rang Tara Finke, he had made a call to London.

To his dead uncle.

I love holiday! I got to read lots of great books and there are still pile of them, so I wouldn't need to fret of having none. One of the picks for this week is Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. Despite the humor genre, I still think it's a great one so far. Bray tried to deliver lots of good messages in the book.

Below are the first paragraph and teaser.

First paragraph:

From the prologue:

This book begins with a plane crash. We do not want you to worry about this. According to the U.S. Department of Unnecessary Statistics, your chances of dying in a plane crash are one in half a million. Whereas your chances of losing your bathing suit bottoms to a strong tide are two to one. So, all in all, it's safer to fly than to go to the beach. As we said, this book begins with a plane crash. They are all beauty queen contestants. You do not need to know their names here. But you will get to know them. They are all such nice girls. Yes, the are nice, happy, shining, patriotic girls who happen to have interests in baton twirling, sign language, AIDS prevention in the animal population, the ancient preparation of popadam, feminine firearms, interpretive dance, and sequins. Such a happy story. And shiny, too.

From the first chapter:

"Are you all right?"

The voice was tinny in Adina's ears. Her head ached, and she was wet. She remembered the plane pitching and falling, the smoke and screams, the panic, and then nothing.

"Am I dead?" she asked the face looming over hers. The face had apple cheeks and was framed by a halo of glossy black curls.

"No."

"When they come to rescue us, they will find us with clean, jungle-forward, fashionable huts and a self-sustaining ecosystem. We will be the Miss Teen Dreamers they write about in history books," Taylor said.

"Nobody writes about Miss Teen Dreamers in history books," Adina scoffed.

Fiuhh, I'm finally done with this semester and have some quiet and refreshing time for a month, before I have to do an internship this January. I didn't have much time to read books when the school was on, but now I'm catching up at the track.

I was in a bit of reading syndrome for the last few months since I couldn't find good books to read, but a week ago I read one of Courtney Summers's works, Cracked Up to Be and it was really awesome! If you're interested, check out my review for the book here.

Now I'm addicted to her books and I'm reading Some Girls Are.

These are the first paragraph and teaser.

First paragraph:

Hallowell High:

You're either someone or you're not.

I was someone. I was Regina Afton. I was Anna Morrison's best friend. These weren't small things, and despite what you may think, at the time they were worth keeping my mouth shut for.

Everyone is wasted.

Anna is wasted. Josh is wasted. Marta is wasted. Jeanette is wasted. Bruce is wasted. Donnie's always wasted. I'm not wasted. I had my turn at the last party, called shotgun in Anna's Benz after it was over. My head was out the window, the world was spinning. I puked my guts out. It wasn't fun, but it's not like there was anything else to do. Tonight, there's even less to do than that. Tonight, I'm the designated driver.

"I heard what happened." He doesn't look at me. "I wanted to make sure you weren't-"

"Dead?" I ask. He nods. "Well, I'm not. But the day is still young. All I have to do is step down a deserted hallway alone, and I'm sure they'll jump me."

First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros is a weekly meme hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by Sea. It lets us share the first paragraph or (a few) of a book we are reading or thinking about reading soon.

I think I'm running out of lucks for good books. I didn't read a lot of them nowadays, instead there were more number of disappointments. Nevertheless, hope this one will remedy that.

First paragraph:

Here is everything I know about France: Madeline and Amélie and Moulin Rouge. The Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, although I have no idea what the function of either actually is. Napoleon, Marie Antoinette, and a lot of kings named Louis. I'm not sure what they did either, but I think it has something to do with the French Revolution, which has something to do with Bastille Day. The art museum is called the Louvre and it's shaped like a pyramid and the Mona Lisa lives there along with that statue of the woman missing her arms. And there are cafés or bistros or whatever they call them on every street corner. And mimes. The food is supposed to be good, and the people drink a lot of wine and smoke a lot of cigarettes.

St. Clair follows my gaze to the massive dome. The violet gray sky, the same sky Paris has seen every day since the temperature dropped, has subdued it, stripped away its golden gleam, but I am no less intrigued.

I know, the teaser is not that catching, but it was rather hard to pick one from this book :| Has anyone read this book? Please tell me that this is a good one, so that I can believe that my luck was not that sapless.

[Teaser Tuesdays]: September 30

After being disappointed with the previous book I read, I hope that what I'm picking right now is the right choice. I really feel the need for some good book.

What I am reading now:

First the colours.
Then the humans.
That's usually how I see things.
Or at least, how I try.

Here is a small fact: You are going to die.

I am in all truthfulness attempting to be cheerful about this whole topic, though most people find themselves hindered in believing me, no matter my protestations. Please, trust me. I most definitely can be cheerful. I can be amiable. Agreeable. Affable. And that's only the As. Just don't ask me to be nice. Nice has nothing to do with me.

Wow, I really like the first paragraph. What makes this book look more interesting to me that it is narrated by Death :]

First paragraph:

What if Shakespeare had it wrong?
To be, or not to be: that is the question. That's from Hamlet's-maybe Shakespeare's-most famous soliloquy. I had to memorize the whole speech for sophomore English, and I can still remember every word. I didn't give it much thought back then. I just wanted to get all the words right and collect my A. But what if Shakespeare-and Hamlet-were asking the wrong question? What if the real question is not whether to be, but how to be?

By this point, more than three weeks have passed since I mailed my letter, so I'm losing hope on that front too. The chances of finding him, never all that great, dim.
